SARA CULVER, CNM

A long time resident of New Haven (and born at St. Raphael’s Hospital herself!), Sara is thrilled and honored to join the WHA family. Sara received her Master’s degree in Nurse Midwifery and Women’s Health from the Yale School of Nursing and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Women’s and Gender Studies from Bates College in Lewiston, ME.

Though she joined the midwife roster in 2022, Sara is no stranger to WHA. She was initally introduced to clinical midwifery as a teenager (!) by former WHA midwife, Kristen Talwalker-Becker, who lit her spark for exploring birth work. She was privileged to meet many of the other WHA midwives during her time as a doula for Birth Parnters Doulas of CT and while at Yale, she was lucky enough to do part of her clinical training at WHA. She is overjoyed to be joinging the team in this new capacity.
Before becoming a midwife, Sara spent six years at Planned Parenthood of Southern New England working in both health care administration and in the provision of reproductive health services to patients across CT and RI. A fierce advocate for reproductive justice, she is dedicated to empowering her patients to take charge of their own stories through their bodies and health. Prior to her career in reproductive health, Sara spent three years working for StoryCorps, a national oral history project focused on collecting the stories of everyday people from across the United States. Her work as a midwife remains fueled by her deep love of patient stories and the immense gratitude she feels for being able to bear witness to and support people’s lived experiences. She is humbled by the patients and families that allow her the ultimate privilege of caring for them throughout their reproductive lifespan.

Apart from midwifery, Sara loves to sing, bake, laugh and soak up the sunshine with her sweet pup, Gracie!
